SENTENCING GUIDELINES -

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS VS LOCAL

RRJ follows the sentencing guidelines as established by the Virginia Department of Corrections:

  • Local Inmates (those receiving sentences totaling 12 months or less) are computed by RRJ.

  • State inmates (inmates receiving sentences totaling over 12 months) are computed by the Virginia Department of Corrections.

  • "B" felonies (felonies committed prior to 01/01/95 and misdemeanor sentences are computed at approximately 50%).

  • "A" felonies (felonies committed on or after 01/01/95 are computed at approximately 87%). Pre-trial credit will be reviewed and will be given, if applicable, to the current sentences the inmate is presently serving.

LEGAL UPDATE SHEET

  •  Inmates sentenced to the Department of Corrections should receive a Legal Update Sheet within 90 to 120 days after final sentencing of all charges from Court and Legal, Department of Corrections.

  • Legal Update Sheet will give the inmate a state number and an estimated release date.

  • The Jail receives a copy of the Legal Update Sheet at the same time the inmate does.

  • The Jail will forward a copy of the update sheet to the inmate upon receipt from the Department of Corrections.
